Khet Bachao Abhiyan: Towards sustainable and fertile farmlands.

New Delhi: More than 9.42 lakh farmers across India have participated in the nationwide ‘Khet Bachao Abhiyan’, a campaign launched by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare to encourage balanced fertiliser use, improve soil health and promote sustainable farming practices.

According to official data released on June 5, the campaign has gained significant momentum through awareness drives, training programmes, field demonstrations and digital outreach activities conducted across the country.

So far, 17,834 awareness programmes have been organised, reaching nearly 6.98 lakh farmers. In addition, 3,698 training sessions have provided guidance to over 1.57 lakh participants on balanced nutrient application, soil health management and scientific farming methods.

To demonstrate practical solutions at the field level, authorities have conducted 8,850 demonstrations focusing on integrated nutrient management, organic nutrient sources and alternative fertiliser practices. The initiative aims to reduce excessive dependence on chemical fertilisers while maintaining long-term soil productivity.

The campaign has also seen active participation from local governance institutions. More than 5,200 panchayat representatives, including sarpanches and district council members, have been involved in spreading awareness about sustainable fertiliser use.

Agricultural input dealers have been engaged as key stakeholders, with interaction programmes conducted for 9,609 dealers to help disseminate information on judicious fertiliser application among farmers.

Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and Farmer Interest Groups (FIGs) have also contributed to the campaign's outreach. A total of 8,383 members from these organisations have received training and awareness on scientific nutrient management practices.

As part of its communication strategy, campaign materials including banners, posters and hoardings have been displayed at more than 60,000 locations nationwide. Awareness efforts have also been amplified through 1,027 radio and community radio broadcasts and 240 television and digital media programmes.

Officials said social media has played a crucial role in expanding the campaign's reach, with messages related to balanced fertiliser use, soil testing and sustainable agriculture reaching nearly 3.5 crore people.

Data available up to June 4 shows that 600 programmes were organised under the campaign during the reporting period, attracting over 32,000 participants.

The Khet Bachao Abhiyan seeks to encourage farmers to adopt soil-test-based nutrient management, improve soil fertility and conserve productive agricultural land for future generations. The initiative aligns with broader efforts to promote sustainable agriculture and maintain the long-term health of India's farmlands.
