Assam records world’s first IVF-born female calf of indigenous Lakhimi breed

Guwahati, August 24, 2026: Assam has achieved a major milestone in livestock biotechnology with the birth of what has been described as the world’s first IVF-born female calf of the indigenous Lakhimi cattle breed.

The calf was born at the IVF Laboratory of the College of Veterinary Science under the Assam Veterinary and Fishery University at Khanapara, Guwahati. The development was announced by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who described it as a convergence of Sabhyata, Sanskriti and Srijan.

New Possibilities for Indigenous Breed Conservation

The Lakhimi breed is native to Assam and forms an important part of the state’s indigenous livestock resources.

The use of IVF and other assisted reproductive technologies could support efforts to conserve native cattle while enabling faster multiplication of animals with desirable genetic traits. The development is also expected to create opportunities for improving disease management and milk productivity.

IVF Facility Set Up Under Rashtriya Gokul Mission

The IVF laboratory where the calf was born was established with support under the Rashtriya Gokul Mission, which focuses on the conservation and development of indigenous bovine breeds.

The latest achievement builds on Assam’s earlier experience with IVF technology. Scientists at the same veterinary institution had previously produced an IVF-born Gir calf, demonstrating the potential for assisted reproductive technology in the state.

Boost for Assam’s Dairy Sector

The breakthrough could strengthen Assam’s efforts to conserve indigenous cattle and improve productivity in the dairy sector.

Chief Minister Sarma said the development could open new avenues for livestock and dairy development, including better milk productivity and improved income opportunities for farmers. He also congratulated the veterinary scientists and professionals involved in the achievement.

The birth marks a significant step in bringing advanced reproductive technology into the conservation and propagation of Assam’s indigenous cattle breeds.
