India, Argentina deepen agriculture cooperation, explore wider market access for Indian farm products

New Delhi: India and Argentina are looking to deepen cooperation in agriculture alongside expanding their engagement in lithium, energy, pharmaceuticals and emerging technologies.

The discussions took place during the fourth meeting of the India-Argentina Joint Trade Committee in Buenos Aires on August 24. The two sides reviewed progress on their existing cooperation roadmap and discussed ways to expand trade and investment between the two countries.

Agriculture emerged as an important area of discussion, with both countries working towards improving market access for Indian farm products in Argentina.

Technical discussions are progressing on sanitary and phytosanitary requirements for several Indian products, including onions, milk and milk products, grapes, potatoes, bananas and pulses.

Better access to the Argentine market could create additional export opportunities for Indian farmers, food businesses and agricultural exporters, particularly as both countries work to reduce trade barriers.

Bilateral trade between India and Argentina crossed USD 6.5 billion in 2025, growing by more than 17% during the year. India has emerged as Argentina's fifth-largest trading partner.

Argentina's efforts to facilitate foreign trade, reduce non-tariff barriers and encourage investment could further support Indian companies looking to expand their presence in the country.

The discussions also covered opportunities in mining, energy and infrastructure, including the continued involvement of Khanij Bidesh India Ltd. (KABIL) in Argentina's lithium sector.

The two countries are also exploring cooperation in aviation, space technology, telecommunications and digital services, including areas such as 5G, artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure.

The engagement continued on August 25 through discussions between businesses and government representatives from both countries. Indian companies explored potential partnerships and investment opportunities across agriculture, minerals, energy, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, tourism, banking and telecommunications.

For Indian agriculture, the progress on market access is particularly significant. Easier entry for products such as fruits, vegetables, dairy products and pulses could help Indian exporters tap new markets while strengthening the country's wider agricultural trade links.

The India-Argentina engagement shows how agriculture is becoming an important part of a broader economic partnership, with opportunities extending from farm products and food trade to critical minerals, energy and technology.
