India has emerged as a major global biotechnology hub, Union Minister Jitendra Singh said, highlighting the sector’s rapid expansion and its growing role in driving innovation across agriculture, healthcare and industry.
The minister noted that India’s biotechnology ecosystem has witnessed significant growth, supported by policy initiatives, research institutions, startups and industry participation. The sector is increasingly contributing to economic development while addressing critical challenges such as food security, sustainability and climate resilience.
In the agricultural domain, biotechnology is playing a key role in crop improvement, development of bio-fertilisers, bio-pesticides, and climate-resilient crop varieties. These innovations are helping enhance productivity, reduce dependency on chemical inputs and promote sustainable farming practices.
The government’s focus on bio-economy expansion, innovation ecosystems and public-private partnerships has further accelerated the sector’s growth trajectory. India’s biotech industry is now seen as a critical component of the country’s broader science and technology landscape.
The minister emphasised that biotechnology will be instrumental in addressing future challenges, particularly in agriculture, where increasing productivity with limited resources remains a key priority.
With rising global demand for sustainable and science-based solutions, India’s emergence as a biotechnology hub positions it to play a larger role in shaping the future of agriculture and life sciences globally.
