New Delhi: The Union Cabinet has approved the continuation of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme for another five years from 2026-27 to 2030-31, with a total financial outlay of ₹3.15 lakh crore.
Chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Cabinet decision ensures that eligible landholding farmer families will continue to receive ₹6,000 annually in three equal instalments through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system.
Launched in February 2019, PM-KISAN has emerged as one of the Government of India's flagship farmer welfare programmes. According to the Government, more than ₹4.47 lakh crore has been transferred directly into farmers' bank accounts through 23 instalments since the scheme's inception.
Under the 23rd instalment, over 9.49 crore farmers received financial assistance amounting to more than ₹18,984 crore. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the scheme disbursed over ₹1.71 lakh crore to support farmers facing financial stress.
The Government said women farmers have received more than ₹1.06 lakh crore under the scheme so far, with nearly one in every four beneficiaries being a woman farmer.
The Cabinet noted that the income support provided under PM-KISAN has enabled farmers to make timely investments in seeds, fertilisers, irrigation, agricultural machinery and other farm inputs, while reducing dependence on informal sources of credit.
Citing an assessment by the Development Monitoring and Evaluation Office (DMEO) of NITI Aayog, the Government said more than 92 percent of beneficiaries reported using the assistance for agricultural activities and investments. Around 85 percent said the scheme had improved their farm income and reduced their reliance on informal borrowing.
The Government also highlighted improvements in agricultural performance between 2020-21 and 2025-26, stating that the area under cultivation increased by around 9.65 percent, productivity by 10.53 percent, and total foodgrain production by 21.18 percent during the period.
The Cabinet said PM-KISAN has become a key example of the use of Digital India initiatives in agriculture through Aadhaar-based authentication, digital verification and the DBT mechanism, ensuring transparent and timely transfer of benefits.
According to the Government, the continuation of the scheme is expected to strengthen farmers' investment capacity, improve agricultural productivity, reduce production risks and support the growth of the rural economy.
